Low Information Voters Twerking to the Bottom

low information votersWhere the culture goes, so goes the electorate and then eventually self-government. So where does that leave us? Apparently “twerking” before the ruling class.

For the newly initiated, “twerking” is described as a “low squatting dance” that involves “moving ones buttocks in a circular, up-and-down, and side-to-side motion; basically a slutty dance derived from strip clubs”. Miley Cyrus demonstrated on national television recently by grinding her rump up against her male co-star on stage. Real classy.

With each passing year, what passes for popular “culture” has become progressively more low-brow and increasingly sexed up. So-called “celebrities” are usually just famous for being famous. Others are sometimes “infamous” for video-taping themselves having sex and then pretending to be upset when it goes public (“That was private, I swear!”). Otherwise, why would anyone know who Kim Kardashian is?

Truly it has been a race to the bottom, going so far into the gutter that you really have to wonder what any of these poor celebrities can do to shock anyone into paying attention to them anymore. Soon they’ll have to start acting like radical conservatives in order to “rebel” and get noticed.

As the country marinates in this stuff we’re becoming overwhelmed with people who know all about who Kim’s “baby-daddy-who’s-not-her-husband” is, but don’t have a clue about the basics of American civics. In the last few election cycles we’ve even invented a new term for these people: “low information voters”. It’s a charitable term which should make the rest of us feel as hopeful for self-government as “low information brain surgeon” would if we were going in for an operation.

So, just how “low-information” are they? Several years ago a Gallup survey found that: 43% of Americans don’t know that the “judicial” is one of the three branches of government; 41% don’t know that their state is represented by two US Senators; 53% don’t know what the “Bill of Rights” is; and 66% can’t identify the document containing the phrase, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal”.

A study in the 2001 Annual Review of Political Science found that “Despite huge increases in the formal educational attainment of the US population during the past 50 years, levels of political knowledge have barely budged. Today’s college graduates know no more about politics than did high school graduates in 1950”.

Feel better?

This makes it easier to understand how the ruling class can get away with incestuous corporate/government relationships that privatize profits and socialize failures, and the resulting massive public debts from bailing out institutions deemed “to big to fail”. Too many people are too stupid to know what’s going on, or too busy watching TMZ or Access Hollywood to care, much less know what to do about it if they did care. (“Look, another video of Kim having sex with someone she’s not married to is coming out! Isn’t she cool? Next, on TMZ!”)

With voters like these, it’s no wonder that our country’s fiscal policies deny the realities of basic arithmetic. With jurors like these, it shouldn’t shock us when a jury awards millions of dollars to someone who spills hot coffee on themselves. Why do you think liberals are less concerned about teaching more civics than they are about making sure we’ve got the right “cultural studies” requirements?

It’s almost like were slowly “terraforming” the country with idiots who are less likely to revolt or even know how. It reminds me of the movie “Idiocracy”, where a guy travels into the future to find everyone blissfully wallowing in self-imposed stupidity and sex obsession to the point of not knowing that they can’t grow food by watering plants with soft-drinks instead of water. He of course becomes their new leader.

Clearly our country needs either better civics (i.e. self-government) education, or some sort of reasonable limits on who can participate. Maybe add a simple question to voter registration forms like, “how many branches of government are there?” Anyone who gets it wrong is banned from voting for one year and is given their choice of either a remedial civics class or a subscription for celebrity sex tapes, (which would trigger a lifetime ban).

One has to wonder when (or if) “low information voters” will ever see the contradictions between their relationship to government and everything else in their lives. Will they ever begin to wonder why most things are becoming simpler and more individually customized, but they can’t get their education, health care or retirement plans the way they want?

It’s a little difficult for them to see (or understand) the conflict between their politics and their other preferences in life if they’re too uninformed to know the difference. Meanwhile, they’re twerking (literally or figuratively) in front of the ruling class, and getting what they deserve.

And they’re taking us down with them.

Leveraging the Benefits of Local Grassroots Lobbying

grassroots lobbyingA critical element of successful grassroots lobbying is knowing how to leverage your strengths.  If you do, your chances of success are much higher.

Part of that involves knowing where to focus.

There is a tendency in American politics to focus too much of our time and attention on federal elected officials.  Granted, the folks in DC spend way too much time and money sticking their noses into things that shouldn’t concern the feds, but don’t let that distract you from spending any time focusing on state and local government.

State and local grassroots lobbying can leverage your assets!

Leverage your numbers:

Since grassroots lobbying is all about local activists working to effectively communicate with and influence elected officials, the more local the office, the greater the potential influence you can have.

While the average member of Congress represents over 700,000 people (and millions per Senator), the average state legislator may represent between 60,000 and 160,000, depending on your state.  And when it comes to city or county councils, or school boards, the numbers are even lower.

Result?  The lower down the political “food chain” your lobbying target is, the larger a percentage of constituents you represent, and the greater your potential political leverage will be.

Leverage your time:

Generally, state legislatures have shorter sessions that run from January through April. There are some states (such as Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and California) that have “full time” legislatures that run from January to December, with recesses only in the spring and fall.

The point is that they generally have less time to deal with whatever they are going to deal with.  Focused grassroots lobbying efforts can help issues see the light of day in otherwise crowded schedules.

Leverage your expertise:

Another nuance to keep in mind is that state lawmakers don’t often have well-rounded expertise on every issue, (no, really!) Many are working full-time at other jobs and legislating on the side. This is even more true at the city/county/school board levels.

In other words, your state representative may be a banker and know a great deal about the economy, but know very little at all about education.

Further, unlike members of Congress, state legislators tend to have little or no staff – much less so at the local level.

As a member of a team that might have extensive knowledge of certain issues, you can be a tremendous asset to your locally elected officials, (especially the friendly ones).

This is a grassroots lobbying opportunity.  Get to know them and then offer your help!

Defund and Repeal Obamcare Now!

repeal obamacareFellow conservative,

Do you think Congress should be exempt from Obamacare?

Do you think they should be able to keep their current insurance and not have to live under the massive health care law they passed without the country’s support?

That’s exactly what a ruling from the Obama administration will let them do.

When the law was passed, an amendment was added specifically requiring that Congress would have to live under the law and get their insurance from these new “exchanges”.  At the time, adding that amendment was the only way they could get the votes to pass it.

Now they don’t want to live under it.

Many members of Congress quietly lobbied Obama to give them a waiver from having to comply with the law.  They said it would lead to a “brain drain” of congressmen and staffers if they he didn’t!

Even the labor unions – led by the AFL-CIO – who campaigned FOR Obamacare are now asking for exemptions and waivers.

Let your members of Congress know that you don’t support ANY changes or waivers from this law – unless it’s a “waiver” that involves repealing or de-funding the whole mess!

More Intrusion in Our Private Lives

Are you ready for your doctor to ask questions about your sex life and share the answers with the government?

That’s what Obamacare pushes doctors to do.

According to one recent report: “The president’s “reforms” aim to turn doctors into government agents, pressuring them financially to ask questions they consider inappropriate and unnecessary, and to violate their Hippocratic Oath to keep patients’ records confidential.”

Public opinion CONTINUES to build AGAINST it.

In the latest USA Today poll, Opposition to Obamacare has reached an all-time high of 53%.  Another poll shows only half the country even realizes that they will have to comply with the insurance mandate – and that’s less than two weeks before it goes into effect.

Opposition will increase as more people understand what is happening.  And that’s why we need to ramp up the pressure on Congress.

More Job Losses and Higher Prices

More companies are being forced to cut employees below 30 hours per week in order to avoid the law’s insurance mandates, or even dropping health insurance benefits all together – a process that will only increase once the law goes into full-effect.

Many existing plans are getting cancelled, because they don’t meet Obamacare’s “minimum requirements”…which means Obama’s “if you like your plan, you can keep it” promise was a lie.

And the premiums for new plans that do qualify are sky-rocketing.

Have you had enough?  Let Congress hear from you.

Tell Them to DE-FUND and REPEAL Obamacare

The upcoming fights over the budget and the debt limit offer an opportunity for Congress to either DE-FUND Obamacare or DELAY it until after the next elections – when we can try to get rid of it again.

The bottom line is that we need to keep up the pressure to make changes NOW!

Say “NO” to Obamacare waivers for Congress and unions.

Say “NO” to giving the government your private medical records.

And say “YES” to ending Obamacare.
